spanish twist on an old fashioned
Happy National Bourbon Day! I usually think these “national days” get a little out of hand (i.e. National Hug Your Cat Day, National Thinking Day, etc), but I have to raise a glass to this one. Bourbon is by far my drink of choice – especially a well made Old Fashioned.
As you may have noticed, we’re currently vacationing on Ocean Isle Beach. It is one of our favorites spots on the Carolina coast! Every family vacation there is always a new drink that everyone needs to try. This year one of the new cocktail elements that we played with was Licor 43. It is a smooth Spanish liqueur with hints of vanilla, citrus and spice that come together for a lovely addition to any cocktail. We bought it with the intention of making their classic Mini Beer, but for National Bourbon Day I’ve put together a Spanish twist on my favorite Old Fashioned.
Below is the recipe. While I used Woodford Reserve today, you can use whatever bourbon you prefer for mixed drinks. In addition to the aforementioned brand, I also recommend Buffalo Trace or Bulleit bourbon. If you want to get really fancy, flame your orange twist for added flavor (here is a great how-to). Pro tip: save the cherry for last. It will soak up all the yumminess (official term) from the bourbon and the Licor 43 for the perfect finish to a great cocktail. I hope you enjoy! Cheers!
Ingredients
2 1/2 parts bourbon
1 part Licor 43
2 dashes of orange bitters
1 maraschino cherry
1 twist of orange peel
Combine bourbon, Licor 43, bitters and cherry in a glass over ice. Twist orange peel to release oils and rub along the inside rim of your glass before adding to your beverage. Stir and enjoy!
