Striped Shirt Dress

I love a great shirt dress.  Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of challenges with anything involving a button front.  Why?  Because I am a woman with curves and with those curves you run into some fit challenges.  This includes button front tops and dresses wanting to gape open and reveal your unmentionables to those you’d rather not share that with.  It’s always something I have to look out for.  The rest of the shirt or dress could fit perfectly, but then the bust of the top is too narrow or the button placement fails me.  However, I’m happy to say that this striped shirt dress from Anthropologie is breaking that cycle!

It features a covered placket that runs the length of the dress.  I’m pictured wearing the size Large.  Normally I have to size up in button front items, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it fit true to size.  I had plenty of room in the armhole and bust area that I didn’t have to worry about anything gaping.  The material was crisp, yet had great movement so you didn’t feel stiff or uncomfortable while wearing it.  I loved the tie waist because it gave a little more shape to the dress, while still maintain the menswear-inspired look.

There were a few extra little details in addition to the tie waist that make this dress special: the collared neck, the cutout at the bottom of the side seam, and the adorable back pocket flaps. These aren’t actual pockets, but I love the look!  I prefer it this way because you get the added detail without the added volume.  I was also impressed by the level of quality in this garment.  When I was shopping online I was a little surprised by the price at $148.  However, now that I have seen it in person and tried it on myself I understand the value behind the price.  You don’t typically get details like those listed above, the neat seam-work and quality cotton fabrication for a price lower than this.  One detail that most people don’t notice that is also indicative of the price point: note how the pockets above are aligned just right so that the stripe is almost perfectly perpendicular with the stripes on the rest of the garment; that placement takes more time and control than the usual fast fashion shirt dress.  In the apparel industry time is money…literally.

Overall, this is a really great item and something that you would find fits into your wardrobe easily.  I paired it with my nude gladiator sandals and woven straw clutch.  Both of these items are older, so they’re no longer available, but I’ve linked similar ones above and below under “shop the post.”  You could also put a cute athletic spin on it like they did here by pairing it with your favorite sneakers and a cute baseball hat.  I only wish that it came in more colors, such as solid white.  That would make it an even better staple!  But who doesn’t love a great stripe?  I know I do!  Let me know what you think and if you need any help figuring out how to work this fabulous shirt dress into your wardrobe.  I recently added a services page for those that might need a little extra styling advise or a wardrobe revamp.  Make sure to check it out and email me with any questions!
