Headbands: Updated and On-Trend

When I think of headbands I go between images from two distinct times in my life: when I was a little girl with giant bows adorning my head and then in high school when Gossip Girl sparked a wave of trends during its hay-day.  For years I developed quite the collection of headbands, scarves and clips until one day, after many had gone un-used for years, I decided to get rid of them.  Now that these beloved accessories have re-surfaced during a new spike in popularity, I’m hearing the words “keep it just in case it come back around” echoing in my head.

Every now and then there is something I’ve cleaned out of my closet that I severely regret a few years later.  Headbands and scarves are one of them.  Granted, the ones I have in mind have had a serious upgrade in the last year or two, but it still would have been nice to have them around just in case I might be able to recycle a few.   Speaking of upgrades, let’s talk about how headbands have changed since the glory days of Blair Waldorf’s reign on the Upper East Side.

Headbands have taken on a bohemian feel with soft fabrics, elastic bands and even braided versions that look more relaxed than the traditional u-shaped plastic we used to don.  Many of the styles you see on the market are really a cross between a headband and a headscarf or turban, like the one I’m wearing in this outfit.  Remember the headaches you used to get from traditional versions?  Fear no more!  This one is flexible and comfortable to wear all day long.  Not to mention, really stinkin’ cute!

Made from one of my favorite contemporary brands, the pearl embellishments add a bit of glam to my pink satin headband.  Plus, it’s currently on sale for only $13, compared to a designer version that could cost you over $100!  I’ve paired it back to a leopard sweater and my go-to ripped black jeans.  My blush handbag (part of a set!) helps tie in the pink tones and the white mules are the finishing touch to this look.
