Holiday Shine

Everyone likes a little sparkle during the holidays and I’m no exception.  I usually have a piece that I buy here and there, but keep forever because I usually only wear sequins during this season.  While this beautiful sequin cape top is an oldie-but-a-goodie, I found some similar items out there that can give you the same look and I’m giving all the details at the bottom of this post.  I’ve paired the top with a sophisticated menswear-inspired jacket.  With cape tops there comes two challenges in the winter: the slits let cold air in so you must wear a coat or suffer for fashion, yet you can’t fit your arms comfortably into the sleeves of your outerwear.  You can kill two birds with one stone by just throwing your jacket over your shoulders and forgetting the function of sleeves all together.  This may sound a little odd, but trust me it works.  You end up looking even more chic and carefree than the average gal with her sleeves on properly.

I chose to pair these items with my faux leather leggings from Spanx.  When it comes to shine I love playing on textures, so in this outfit we have the shine from sequins which is a more rough, complex visual texture paired with the smooth shine of faux leather. By now you have most likely heard me rave about them a few times.  For those who haven’t, here is what you need to know:

• High-waisted leggings with a shaping waistband, which is wide and features a hidden power mesh.  This means a structured fit that will smooth and tighten, but keep you comfortable throughout the day/night.
• Adds a dose of sass with any outfit: pair back with an over-sized sweater, festive top, some faux fur, or a cute tunic.  There are so many options!  Which makes their price per wear that much better (calculation: item costs __ / # times I’ll wear them this year = cost per wear).
• They’re flattering on all body types!  And no struggle to get into them like the usual faux leather legging because they’re a knit nylon/spandex.
• Machine washable.  That’s right!  With as many times as you’ll wear these leggings you’ll need to wash them from time to time and Spanx has made it easy by ensuring that you can just pop them in the washer at home.  No dry cleaning necessary!

So since a few of these items are older and no longer for sale online, I’ve linked some similar pieces for you so you can easily achieve this look.  As I mention before, there are two different tops that I would suggest trying to achieve this look.  Each would be fantastic additions to any closet!

GET THE LOOK

The first one is a cape top from Forever 21 that features a more bold texture and throw to the 80’s.  It actually has a knit velvet base with large sequins on top of it.  Definitely a great party top or for a night out if you’re feeling extra sassy!

The other idea is going with a fabulous sequin cape blazer vs a top.  I love this idea because you can play with what tops to layer underneath.  An easy velvet or satin cami would look great under this!  You could also be daring and wear a low-cut bodysuit, cropped top or sexy bralette!  Pair this back with faux leather leggings as I did in my outfit or wear it with dark jeans.
