3 Ways to Wear Velvet

Velvet is, and has been for quite some time, a trend that is all the place.  However, it can be an intimidating fabric because not every velvet piece is going to work every person.  The trick is finding the right interpretation for your personal style that seems as if it’s an effortless addition to your wardrobe.  Keep reading for how I like to wear this trend and a few ways you can incorporate it for the a more understated look.

Let’s start with the easiest thing first: accessories.  Accessories are the perfect way to add a dash of luxe to any look and subtly incorporate velvet into your wardrobe. I love these handbags, especially a fabulous clutch for holiday parties and cocktails this season!  Shoes are also another great way to wear velvet.  A strappy sandal will be perfect for date night, events and more, while a velvet flat can carry you from desk to dinner with ease.

If you’re more interested in finding a top, I highly suggest starting with a versatile (and affordable!) piece like this velvet tee from Old Navy.  It can be worn numerous ways and comes in several rich Fall hues like burgundy and marigold.  Plus, it’s on sale for less than $25!  Pair it back to jeans, skirts or throw it on over leather leggings for a luxe look.

To make more of a statement, you can try a more intricate top like this one by Johnny Was.  I received this as one of my unlimited wardrobe items from Gwynnie Bee.  The embroidery is beautiful and gives it an extra hand-made quality.  I also love the silhouette because it’s feminine, flowy and flattering.

For a bold look, go with a velvet dress!  Right now I’m really loving faux wrap styles because they highlight your curves and really play off the beautiful draping qualities of velvet.  Trapeze and shift styles are also great, it just depends on what you feel most comfortable in.  I particularly like unique pieces like this one that balances layers with a bare shoulder.  It’s sassy, fresh and fabulous!
